Super
Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, on Thursday, quit from the Super
Eagles following his rift with the team’s Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.
"Henceforth, I am no more the captain of the Nigerian senior football
team; I am no more the goalkeeper of the team, I am out of the team; I
am no more available for international duties," he said in a message on
social media.
NAN reported that the relationship between Enyeama and Oliseh had gone sour, leading to the stripping of the goalkeeper as team captain and the choice of Ahmed Musa as his replacement.
A quarrel had erupted on Tuesday at the team’s camp in Belgium where it was preparing for two friendly matches billed for Thursday and Sunday against DR Congo and Cameroon.
Enyeama had reported late to camp after staying back in Nigeria last weekend to be involved in the burial ceremony of his late mother in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Words were reportedly exchanged as Enyeama tried to explain his being late, with Oliseh reportedly ordering him out of the camp and asking security personnel to ensure this.
NAN reported that Enyeama had missed the team’s last set of games against Tanzania and Niger Republic in September, in Dar es Salaam and Port Harcourt respectively.
This must have prompted Oliseh to say there was a need to have a player who was regular in the team as the captain.
Oliseh had also pointed out that the performance of Musa in recent matches earned him the captain’s arm band.
Following this development, Enyeama, through his instagram’s page, said on Thursday that it was time to quit from the Super Eagles.
"I have fought a good fight for more than 13 years; I have finished my course. I have kept the faith and sang the anthem with passion.
"There is a crown for me which only God can reward me for my 13 years of national service," he said.
The France-based goalkeeper then thanked his national team fans for their support.
