Henry Cavill reportedly out as Superman – Black Panther star tipped to wear the cape

Cavill has appeared as Kal-El in three DCEU films: Man of Steel, which was released in 2013 and kickstarted the cinematic universe, the widely-panned Batman v. Superman (2016) and the under-performing Justice League, which was released last year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. had been trying to negotiate a cameo for Cavill's caped hero in the forthcoming Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi, but conflicts with his filming schedule for Mission: Impossible – Fallout made it impossible.

The studio is apparently no longer interested in investing in the British actor's character as they are planning to move the focus of the DC films in a different direction and have no plans for any Superman films in the near future.

A source said: "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors." Warner Bros. are eager to "reset" the under-performing franchise, according to the source.

Looking forward, Deadline have reported that producers are even considering a future in which Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan could be cast in the role.

But for now, the news means that Cavill will likely join Ben Affleck, who formerly starred as Batman and has also reportedly walked away from the franchise, in severing ties with the studio.

Justice League actors Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot still have their own films on the DCEU slate, as Aquaman is due for release in December and Wonder Woman 1984 the following year.

The loss of the superhero role will likely be a blow to Cavill, who has always spoken passionately about his work as the character. But the actor does have a big-budget Netflix series The Witcher (an adaptation of the cult fantasy books and video games) in development and received praise for his role in the most recent Mission: Impossible installment.

In fact, the star is also reported to be in the running for what is currently one of the most coveted jobs in film – James Bond. And although Cavill may have stiff competition from the likes of Tom Hardy and Idris Elba, his schedule is now looking much clearer.
