CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction
The
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is an exercise carried out within a
period of three to six months in the third/fourth year of an undergraduate program.
The exercise was established to bridge the gap between academic world and
industrial world.
1.2 Brief History of SIWES in Nigeria
SIWES,
which means Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme was created to help
Nigerian students get practical knowledge and wide horizons based on their
future profession while they are still studying at the University.
It
was so that students who entered Nigerian institutions to study science and
technology didn’t have any practical knowledge before graduation. As a result,
getting a job was quite difficult for them due to lack of industrial skills and
working experience until 1973.
So,
the question is, what changed? The ITF (Industrial Training Fund) decided to
help all interested Nigerian Students and established SIWES program. It was
officially approved and presented by the Federal Government in 1974, which is
now being coordinated by ITF and NUC (National Universities Commission).
All
students of specialized discipline such as: Engineering, Technology, Business,
Applied Science and Applied Art program in higher institutions shall be required
to have a compulsory supervised industrial attachment as part of their regular
studies in such manner as may be prescribed by their boards or commission.
